First Impressions

Looks can be deceiving. Of the three shoes in our test – the Columbia Master of Faster, the La Sportiva CrossLeather and the Vasque Scree Low – this later shoe had the most traditional light-hiker look. But underneath, where it really matters, the Scree Low uses Stealth S1 rubber making it as capable and up-to-date as even the most advanced and flashy new product out on the market.

Features

Out of the box, we liked the traditional design and the solid construction. It looks a little bulky on the outside, but it sure didn’t feel that way underfoot. The leather upper is durable and the mesh inserts and tongue aid breathability. I never overheated in this shoe.

The standout feature on the Scree Low is its use of Stealth S1 rubber. Stealth S1 was developed by Vasque’s supplier Five Ten to be the ideal compound for hiking and mountain biking shoes. It’s designed to absorb shock and provide increased durability. In addition, the Stealth S1 provides great stickiness. We found that out by hiking in the Sierras during one particularly stormy Spring day. Thanks to the Stealth rubber, the Scree Lows were able to scramble up steep rock approaches and stream banks without a problem – even those slicked with rain and snow.

Upper: Leather
Sole: Stealth S1 rubber
Weight: 30 oz

Other features include a rubber toe cap to further protect the forefoot.

Fit

As mentioned earlier, the Scree Lows look a touch big on the outside. And again appearances are deceiving. The toebox is fairly tight for a shoe that looks as wide as the Scree. The rest of the fit is pretty standard stuff, no surprises and they run true to size.

Final Verdict

The Scree Low is a solid choice in a light hiker. The look is traditional but the addition of Stealth S1 rubber really makes this one of the most versatile on the market. Don’t be fooled by the outward appearance, these light hikers will work for even narrow feet.
