Quick Take Review
What’s up with some tent manufacturers? They will more than happily sell you a tent that will last a lifetime but include stakes that can’t stand up to a single outing. A recent experience sent me on a quest for replacement stakes and I believe I found the best option for a buck on the market – the REI Tri-Stake.
We’ve all had the experience. Go to pitch your brand new tent and everything works perfectly until it’s time to stake it down. You open the package of stakes only to find flimsy aluminum or some other metal that bends as you attempt to drive it into the ground, or a shape that won’t hold in loose soil, or any number of other deficiencies. At GearGuide, we recently completed a search for replacement stakes and found the best option at REI.
The REI Tri-Stake is an unadorned 7000-grade aluminum stake. As the name suggests, the Tri-Stake has three sides for strength and for improved hold in compact and loose soil. The top is notched to hold guy lines. And that’s about it.
Sure, you can spend twice as much and get a similar stake with a colorful anodized finish. Or if you’re counting ounces, titanium will help but set you back five-times the price. Simply put, the REI Tri-Stake is the best stake for a buck you can buy.
