First Impressions
Bold, baby, bold. Out of the box, the Vasque Rift multisport shoe definitely makes an impression with some of the brightest colors and color combos in the outdoor footwear category. But don’t let the good looks fool you, the Vasque Rift is more than a pretty face.
Features
Vasque builds the Rift from a sueded Nubuck leather and flat seams the pieces together for comfort. The collar is a nicely padded nylon. And the lacing system is classic approach shoe style that goes from ankle to toe for a very customizable fit.
The leather upper isn’t waterproof so depending on your usage, you may want to treat it with an aftermarket product.
Specs
Upper: Nubuck Leather
Sole: Vibram Spider, Idropgrip Compound
Weight: 1 lb 11 oz
Underfoot, Vasque employs Vibram’s Spider rubber and Idrogrip which is designed to improve traction in wet conditions. The combination of rubbers did a fine job in a variety of conditions both wet and dry. In addition, the heel and toe are wrapped in rubber to improve durability and options while scrambling.
Fit
On first wearing, I was surprised by the lack of padding under the forefoot. I typically like a little more in that area, but quickly became used to the Rift’s more streamlined approach. The lacing system made for easy customization and the padded collar was very comfortable. Sizing is true, no need to size up or down from your normal hiking shoe or boot.
Final Verdict
Vasque – a division of Red Wing Shoe Company – typically doesn’t stray far from the beaten path with its shoe designs. Although they put plenty of technology into their products, the look has been, well, conservative. The Rift delivers a welcome departure from the traditional with great style and solid performance. If you’re looking for a multisport option that can handle the trail and the town, this might just be the perfect shoe.
