Quick Take Review
If you’re like us, you have drawers full of tech fabric shirts, shorts, baselayers and the like. Most of that clothing has the not-so-rich feel of polyester. Finding a blend of fibers that bring the wicking performance of polyester and the truly rich feel of cotton has proven somewhat elusive to clothing designers. But the folks at Sport Science have done just that.
A few weeks ago, we received a couple of Sport Science Smarter Basics t-shirts. The men’s version came in a deep green, the women’s in heather sky blue. Although the colors weren’t a big hit, the classic t-shirt styling was. The men’s employs a fairly straightforward cut, while the women’s is more tailored and sculpted with quartered sleeves. Nicely done.

Material: 85% polyester, 15% cotton
The other winning feature of the Sport Science shirt is the texture of the blend fabric, which is much akin to 100% cotton. The shirt feels hefty – like a favorite old-school tee – but that perception is somewhat deceiving. The addition of cotton adds a mere quarter of an ounce to the shirt as compared to a similarly sized all polyester product. That slight weight penalty is well worth it and there seemed to be no loss of wicking performance.
The Sport Science shirts are trim fitting. The men’s large fit my typically medium-sized frame perfectly, so feel free to go up a size unless you prefer your t-shirts tight.
Overall, the Sport Science Smarter Basics t-shirts deliver exactly what the company promises – great old-school styling that doesn’t scream “I’m for working out and nothing else” and 100% cotton feel along with state-of-the-art wicking performance. At $22, the price is also right. Great stuff!
