First Impressions
Extreme sports supplier Dakine designed the Pro II pack specifically for winter-time use. Think of it initially as a backcountry tool capable of handling skis or a snowboard, and all the other elements necessary for a day in the mountains. But just as with the Ortovox Haute Route, the Dakine Pro II is versatile enough to adapt to warm weather pursuits thanks to a laundry list of adaptable features.
Features
Let’s start with the snow-specific features. There are straps for carrying a snowboard and pair of skis, and a sleeve for a snow shovel handle or ice ax. On the upper rear of the pack, Dakine located a fleece lined goggle pocket. And the hydration sleeve is insulated.
Specs
Carrying Capacity: 26 L (1600 cu in)
Weight: 3 lbs
Construction: Nylon with ballistic nylon reinforcements,
Frame: Integrated rigid foam back panel
Dimensions: 21 x 12 x 7 in
Just about all these features can be easily adapted for four-season versatility. Take the sleeve for snow shovel handle and use it to hold a trekking pole. That goggle pocket will hold sunglasses or other valuables. And insulated hydration sleeve, hey it works for keeping water cool in the summer too.
Other elements on the Pro II include an additional side pocket, a main compartment that opens both from the top and back (behind the shoulder straps) for versatility, and a large rear pocket for additional storage.
Fit
The Pro II provides a solid fit. Both the shoulder straps and waist belt adjust easily. The lack of any real rigid back panel – there’s only an integrated semi-rigid foam back – limits the pack’s stability somewhat. But there are multiple compression straps to cinch down the load.
Final Verdict
Nice pack, nice four-season capabilities. If you want a pack that can span the spring-summer-fall-and-winter, check out the Dakine Pro II.
