Mountain Hardwear Lamina 20 Women’s Sleeping Bag Review

Mountain Hardwear Women's Lamina 20 Bag

Mountain Hardwear Women's Lamina 20 Bag

First Impressions

Mountain Hardwear describes the Lamina 20 as “an excellent choice for damp, cold conditions.” We chose the Girl Scout Camporee over Memorial Day weekend for our test. After our excursion into the Santa Cruz Mountains in May – for more than our fair share of cold, fog, drizzle and rain – we have only one response. Agreed!

Features

The Lamina 20 women’s sleeping bag is built using lightweight Thermic Micro synthetic insulation and a patent-pending fabric welding technology. The result is a bag that feels very light and easy to haul into the campsite.

Both the exterior and interior of the Lamina are made from silky 40 denier polyester taffeta and feel extremely soft and comfy. It has a much more luxurious feel than the Kelty Cosmic bag also in this test. I wanted to crawl back into the Lamina during the day and nap, but no time unfortunately. The durable water-repellent coating stayed completely dry during what I consider to be very damp conditions.

Mountain Hardwear cuts the Lamina specifically for women and packs a little extra insulation into the footbox. The footbox also follows natural foot position and is designed for maximum comfort. I definitely appreciated the roomy area around the feet, there was no constriction which I have noticed in other bags.

Moving from foot to head, the Lamina has a face gasket and tailored hood. This was probably the feature I appreciated most. With the hood zipped up I was completely warm. As soon as I pulled my head out to listen for other campers, I could feel the difference and the cold!

And finally, there’s an internal zippered pocket at the shoulder for storage. It’s a great feature, and we used it for car keys.

Fit

The Lamina was extremely comfortable. I felt free to move and reposition, and the bag moved with me easily. It has just the right amount of roominess for comfort, while maintaining warmth. My feet were never cold, which is not something I can say very often.

Final Verdict

Mountain Hardwear scores big with the Lamina. At $180, the Lamina is right in the middle of the pack price-wise. But it more than keeps pace with more expensive products. We loved the softness and durability.

Available at Massey’s Outfitters.
