First Impressions
These days, technical fishing apparel comes in all shapes and styles. There’s nothing that says traditional button-down fishing shirts – like the Columbia Airgill Chill and Ex Officio Air Strip – are de rigueur. There are tons of other looks on the market, from mocks to henleys to upgraded t-shirts. Case in point, the Redington Rex Technical Tee.
Features
The Redington Rex Technical Tee is a very versatile product. It can be worn as a base layer or a mid layer over a regular t-shirt. Redington manufactures the shirt from 100% polyester so it is stain resistant, light weight (less than nine ounces) and dries quickly. The shirt is treated with antimicrobial to resist odors which worked reasonably well in our test.
To keep you cool, Redington places mesh venting under the arms and down the sides of the Rex. The company locates additional fabric panels near the wrist for more ventilation. The wrist also includes a thumb hole so the elongated sleeves can be pulled down over the back of the hand for warmth and sun protection.

Finally, there’s a zippered security pocket on the upper right arm. It’s not big enough for a fly box, but cash, keys or credit cards fit just fine.
Fit
Given that it’s a t-shirt and meant to be worn primarily as a base layer the fit is somewhat trim. Not overly so, however, because we could easily wear it over a regular short-sleeve t-shirt. Order your normal size.
Final Verdict
Although not a fully featured as more traditional shirts, don’t overlook Redington’s Rex Technical Tee. It’s comfortable, cool and has just enough technical features to keep you fishing in a variety of weather conditions.
