Johnston & Murphy Hunley Chukka Boot Review

Johnston & Murphy Hunley Chukka

First Impressions

The venerable Johnston & Murphy got its start in the 1850s and continues to build high-quality footwear for the nation’s leaders, corporate executives and regular guys like you and me. The company makes about eight different variants on the chukka boot theme including the Hunley Plain Toe Chukka. I ran across them recently in one of the many Johnston & Murphy stores and was instantly smitten with the cross-over styling and rugged good looks.

Features

Johnston & Murphy crafts the Hunley Chukka from full-grain leather and lines it with sheepskin. The leather is extremely soft in the hand, a major contrast for instance, to the Clarks Roar also in this review. The company pads the collar of the shoe for added comfort and includes a cushioned insole that gives this boot a slipper-like feel.

Specs
Weight: 2 lb 8 oz per pair (men’s size 11)
Sole: Rubber
Upper: Leather

Part of the Hunley Chukka’s appeal is its styling. Contrasting stitching give it a fashion-forward look that’s both sporty and conservative all at once. Well done, Johnston & Murphy.

The sole of the Hunley is made from flexible rubber. The integrated heal delivers low-profile comfort. And the chevrons molded into that rubber deliver solid traction on dry and wet surfaces.

Fit

The Johnston & Murphy Hunley Chukka has a glove-like fit. Instantly comfortable and true to size. The cushioned insole is pillow soft and holds up well to wear.

Final Verdict

If I could own only one pair of chukkas, the Johnston & Murphy Hunley Plain Toe Chukka would be that pair. The look is great and the comfort unmatched. They’re perfect around town, out to dinner or a ball game. And the good news is, I don’t need to limit myself to just one pair. I liked them so much I bought both brown and black. Recommended.
