First Impressions
After testing lightweight minimalist type shoes, I was inevitably struck by the added weight of a stability shoe. Staying within an apples-to-apples framework, I compared the Kayano weight to other pairs of stability shoes and was impressed with the relatively lightweight of the Kayano 19. The men’s shoe is a ½ ounce lighter than the 18th version of the Kayano. Nonetheless, I was taken aback by the $150 MSRP.
Features
The Kayano 19 is a fully loaded stability shoe with outstanding features designed for increased comfort and dependable performance. Starting with the uppers, the biomorphic fit uses stretch material to enhance flexibility on tricky terrain runs. The mesh material and sock liner give the shoe increased breathability, which helped to keep odors at bay both during and between runs. The ventilation also kept my feet reasonably cool particularly as temperatures and distances increased. The toe box provided just enough room to ensure comfort but not too much to feel sloshy.
The noticeably improved mid-foot shank added to the overall stability of the shoe as well as any mild pronation concerns I sometimes experience. The lightweight and dual density materials in the midsole provided stability and support throughout various length runs. The heel clutching system worked well to keep my foot secure in the heel cup. Furthermore, the two layers of memory foam in the collar molded to my heel for a personalized and secure fit. The gel cushioning system in the heel and forefoot absorbed shock well even on hard pavement and added to overall comfort regardless of terrain.

The vertical flex groove on the outsole is designed to promote a natural runner’s movement. Sure enough my feet rotated freely in stride. Between the vertical groove and the gel cushioning, my gait was reliable and efficient. The outsole is comprised of high abrasion rubber. The shoes performed well on a wide variety of surfaces including concrete, hard pack, loose, wet, dry, flat, and sloped terrain, which gave me confidence to attack any terrain. The outsole held up very well under all conditions.
Fit
From heel to toe and from the uppers down to the outsole, the Kayano 19 is an exceptionally comfortable shoe that runs true to size. Although not quite a second skin, the top half has a glove like feel when the laces are tightly secured. The discreet eyelets work well to disburse lace tension across the top. Re-lacing was not necessary, zero hot spots.
Final Verdict
The Kayano 19 is an all-purpose stability shoe specifically designed for comfort and support. With top of the line features, it’s not surprising that the Kayano 19 earned the seal of acceptance from the American Podiatric Medical Association. Despite the luxurious creature comforts of the latest iteration of the Kayano, the $150 MSRP seems too pricey.
