HuMn Wallet Review

HuMn Wallet Mini

There’s a ton of really cool stuff going on with Kickstarter. If you don’t know the website, it’s a place to find crowd source funding for almost any kind of product. Many upstart outdoor gear companies head there to promote ideas and get some seed cash for initial production runs. HuMn was one such company. And in 2012 they raised over $300,000 to launch two products – the initial HuMn Wallet and the HuMn Wallet Mini. Call them two modern money clip alternatives and I’ve been putting the HuMn Wallet Mini through the paces this fall. Out of the box, the HuMn Wallet Mini is damn cool.

Features

Here’s the deal. The HuMn Wallet – which is just under four inches in width – and the HuMn Wallet Mini (slightly smaller) are made of plates of carbon fiber or aircraft-grade aluminum. You pick the colors from the roughly 15 options on the HuMn website. The plates are connected with an elastic strap (color also specified by you when ordering).

To use the HuMn Wallet, you simply slip credit cards, your drivers license, whatever, in between the two plates. Cash, should you have it, slides under the strap on the exterior of the plates. Easy peasy.

Specs
Weight: 1.1 oz (carbon fiber)
Dimensions: 3.80 x 2.5 in
Capacity: 6 credit cards
Materials: Carbon fiber or aluminum

HuMn built its wallets to block RFID skimming, a crime especially in Europe where most credit cards are now equipped with RFID chips. Since I’m based in the U.S., I don’t own one of those types of cards. But I do use an RFID badge everyday to access my office. Using that security system as my test, badge tightly secured between the plates of my HuMn Wallet Mini, I was unable to open the locked door. Skimming successfully blocked.

Fit

Dimension-wise, the HuMn Wallet Mini is perfect in my opinion. A normal credit card comes in at 3.375 by 2.125 inches. Dollar bills folded in half hit roughly that same dimension. The HuMn Wallet Mini measures 3.8 by 2.5 inches, just enough to hold cover the cards and handle the cash. The elastic strap delivers sufficient tension to keep everything in its place.

Final Verdict

Like I said before, the HuMn Wallet Mini is damn cool. It’s definitely not your granddaddy’s money clip. Instead, the HuMn Wallet Mini delivers the carrying capacity of a standard wallet with a fraction of the bulk. The two plates deliver the RFID skimming protection as promised. Not cheap at nearly $80, but completely functional and beautiful to look at. I’ve banged mine around pretty good for 30 days and seen not a single sign of wear. Check it out at www.humnwallet.com.
