The 10 Essentials are the elements necessary to survive in an emergency situation in the wilderness. I recommend carrying them even on short hikes. It\u2019s amazing how quickly \u2013 even in relatively urbanized hiking areas \u2013 you can be off the grid<\/em> and totally on your own.<\/p>\n

According to the classic text book Mountaineering: The Freedom of the Hills<\/em>, the ten essentials are:<\/p>\n

  1. Map<\/li>\n
  2. Compass<\/li>\n
  3. Sunglasses and sunscreen<\/li>\n
  4. Extra food<\/li>\n
  5. Extra water<\/li>\n
  6. Extra clothes<\/li>\n
  7. Flashlight<\/li>\n
  8. First aid kit<\/li>\n
  9. Fire starter<\/li>\n
  10. Knife<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    There are a number of updated 10 Essentials lists. Here\u2019s the GearGuide version that works for us:<\/p>\n

    1. Navigation (map, compass, GPS device)<\/li>\n
    2. Communication (mobile phone, walkie talkie, emergency beacon)<\/li>\n
    3. Protection (sunglasses, sunscreen, insect repellent)<\/li>\n
    4. Insulation (clothing, space blanket or other emergency shelter)<\/li>\n
    5. Illumination (headlamp, flashlight)<\/li>\n
    6. Nutrition (food)<\/li>\n
    7. Hydration (water)<\/li>\n
    8. Cumbustion (matches, lighter, flint\/steel, magnesium bar)<\/li>\n
    9. First-aid (bandages, antiseptic, hand sanitizer)<\/li>\n
    10. Tools (knife or multitool, paracord, duct tape)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
