First Impressions

More than 60s years ago, so the story goes, Clarks popularized the Desert Boot. Today, that original product is available in nearly 30 different colors and has spawned a numerous variations within the Clarks line up. One of those is the Roar Chukka Boot. Clarks builds it with a heavier lugged sole and wider cut than its traditional Desert Boot. Despite that outdoorsy approach, the Roar Chukka looks right at home in the urban landscape.

Features

The Clarks Roar Chukka Boot isn’t fancy. The upper is full-grain leather which feels stiff and a little “down market” to be honest. However, in our tests it performed well. Although the Roar doesn’t proclaim waterproofing as an “official” feature, the product did a fine job of keeping my feet dry without over heating. Lacing is straightforward too, with three eyelets and no metal reinforcements.

Specs

Weight: 2 lb 11 oz per pair (men’s size 11)

Sole: Synthetic

Upper: Leather

Clarks makes the Roar Chukka’s sole from a heavy-duty synthetic rubber. Think hiking boot lugging. But it’s still low-profile enough to wear to the office and not look out of place.

Fit

Like just about everything about the Roar Chukka, the fit doesn’t take you out of the comfort zone. A men’s 10.5 fits like it should, like a men’s 10.5. No need to size up or down. I did find that a little extra insole helped cushion that heavy sole, however.

Final Verdict

The Clarks Roar Chukka Boot riffs on the heritage of the original Desert Boot. We liked the approach which worked in both the outdoors and urban environments thanks to the leather upper and lugged sole. They’re available at Amazon.
