First Impressions
At GearGuide, we typically think of Pearl Izumi as one of the higher end athletic apparel manufacturers. Their products typically perform well and are optimized for running and cycling. We were impressed recently with the company’s In-R-Cool Short Sleeve Shirts, as an example. But Pearl Izumi makes footwear as well and we had the chance to try several pairs over this past summer including the Streak II. Out of the box, the shoe presented the sleek and low-to-the-ground style that definitely fit the minimalist bill.
Features
The Streak II is a neutral shoe unencumbered by extra guidance features (although there is a small arch support evident under the instep). And that contributes to the lightest weight of any shoe in our test. The Streak II comes in at just 8.75 ounces per shoe, about four ounces lighter than the Nike Zoom Elite+ and the ASICS GEL-NEO33. In addition to foregoing stability features, Pearl Izumi also jettisons the notion of fancy gel inserts and other weight adders in the mid-sole. Instead, Pearl Izumi goes with what it terms 1:1 Energy Foam. We found it more than adequate in the shock absorption department in our tests.
Minimal is right where the Streak II is positioned. It has a 19mm heel (the lowest stack height in the test) and 10mm forefoot for the requisite nine millimeter target for the category. Outsole is also made of a heavier duty foam and wore quite well as we racked up the miles.
Specs
Weight: 17.5 oz per pair (Mens size 11)
Forefoot height: 10mm
Heel height: 19mm
Pearl Izumi chose nylon mesh for the upper and sculpted the shoe anatomically. It’s seamless and comfortable with and without socks.
Fit
According to the Pearl Izumi website, the Streak Ii runs small and our test confirms it. We received a men’s size 11 sample (my normal size) and would have preferred an 11.5 when running in socks. However, if you fall into the sockless-running camp, you’re normal size should work.
Final Verdict
Pearl Izumi bills the Streak II as your new go-to PR shoe. And why not? It’s got the light weight and low profile necessary to encourage record-breaking performances. Although I didn’t attempt one during this review, give it – and these shoes – a try. I bet you won’t be disappointed.
