First Impressions

Bell makes a range of MTB helmets, from the entry-level Rush to their top-of-the-line Full-9. Right in the middle is the Super 2. The company actually maintains two version of the Super 2. The higher-end version employs the new MIPS construction. We opted for the more traditionally constructed non-MIPS version for this test. At $135 MSRP — and found at REI at less than half of that — we liked the value-for-money of the standard Super 2 a whole lot. Color combos range from black and white, to grays, reds, blues and greens.

Features

One the the things that immediately attracted us to the Super 2 was the full coverage provided by the helmet. It wraps the rear of the head more substantially than many other helmets delivering a greater level of protection in falls, especially those to the side or backwards. The outer shell is polycarbonate and on our test model very lightly textured.

Bell provides plenty of vents on the Super 2. There are 23 total along with four that sit right at the forehead that help push air up and over the brow. We found the ventilation on the Super 2 very good overall and the sweat absorption delivered by the padded lining good as well.

Additionally, the Bell Super 2 comes with a built-in visor that tilts backward to accommodate goggles. The company also includes a GoPro camera mount that attaches with a hook and loop strap, easily removable for those not inclined to record their every mountain-biking move.

The Super 2 also works with the Wrap Around Chin Bar in case you need full-face coverage. We didn’t try this in our test.

Fit

The Bell Super 2 sits nicely on the head, low and slightly over the ears (which is a little disconcerting if you’re not used to having your helmet sit that low. Easy enough to get acclimated to, however.

Adjustment is had via Bell’s TAG system. It’s a small dial at the rear of the helmet that tightens or loosens the fit. We found it very easy to get things just right.

Final Verdict

Hard to fault the Bell Super 2. The helmet provides outstanding protection, terrific ventilation and a solid set of features (including the visor and camera mount). The fit is a little off-putting at first, but easy to adjust. When you find these on sale at places like Jenson USA, REI, Sierra Trading Post or elsewhere, they can be amazing bargains.
