Mountainsmith Red Rock 25 Review
First Impressions
Over the past couple of years, Mountainsmith has become one of the go-to travel gear brands at GearGuide. The Discovery and Boarding Pass rolling bags remain favorites for trips of virtually any size. So when we were offered the opportunity to check out the new-for-2013 Red Rock 25 backpack, we jumped at the chance. It arrived with rugged good looks and a long list of features making it suitable for use on the trail and around town.
Features
What features, you may ask? Well for starters, Mountainsmith builds the Red Rock from light-weight ripstop nylon – 420 denier where you need it (on the bottom and side panels) and lighter 210 denier for the rear and liner. Speaking of liners, Mountainsmith does something I love on the Red Rock which is line the interior with a bright yellow fabric that brightens the inside substantially and makes seeing and finding items very easy.

Materials: Duramax Nylon

On the exterior, Mountainsmith places two additional mesh pockets for water bottles, umbrellas and other items. There’s a daisy chain, multiple lash points and a top carry handle as well.
Fit
Fit can be easily customized for almost any size user. The shoulder straps are padded nicely and very comfortable. There’s a removable waist belt for additional support and further securing your load, should you need it. A sternum strap also helps.
Final Verdict
The Mountainsmith Red Rock is a great daypack that delivers both urban and outdoor cred. Loaded with laptop and file folders, it will take you easily to work and back. Strap on your trekking poles and drop in a camera, and you’re ready for a day hike. We love the versatility, signature yellow lining and looks. Nicely done once again, Mountainsmith.

I’ve owned the Mountainsmith Red Rock 25 for about 5 years and have found it to be a very good day pack. The durable material and craftsmanship of manufacture is superior. Design is also a solid attribute if this pack. I’ve owned and abused packs for 5 decades now. This pack has never let me down. It remains my pack of choice for day trips. My only concern is the availability of Mountainsmith products. I have owned 3 … All have been discontinued. It is my opinion that Mountainsmith gives up on a product too soon. A 35 liter Red Rock with upgrade on suspension to accommodate the larger pack and associated weight gain would be simply a Awesome pack that would be appreciated by many who favor durability and design.
