Tyler Campbell grew up in roughly the same area of Northern California as I did, doing many of the same things – camping, fishing and generally spending time in the outdoors. On a recent camping trip, he and a group of friends came up with the idea for MyCampMate, a combination of website and iPhone app that’s a way for campers, outdoor enthusiasts and regular old travelers to share information about cool spots they’ve visited, tips and other insider information that can make or break a trip.

The application allows you to create a group of mates, people you travel with often and share trip details for upcoming outings. You can place pins on MyCampMate maps to highlight great vendors, restaurants and other resources. There’s a built-in trip calculator that allows you to track expenses and split them up amongst the group. And it takes advantage of the iPhone’s GPS capabilities so you’re never lost.

I really dig Tyler’s concept and can’t wait to start putting my own pins on a MyCampMate map.
