First Impressions

First impressions aren’t always accurate. Initially, I was skeptical about the First Ascent Downlight Half Zip Pullover being versatile enough. For the record, I love the half-zip and have several in fleece and other lightweight performance fabrics. But down? Not so sure. Could a pullover-style in down really work? As it turns out, a down pullover does work. In fact, Eddie Bauer’s new First Ascent Downlight Hoodie Pullover is a home run and makes a great alternative to a regular jacket.

The Downlight Hoodie Pullover is made of a silky ripstop nylon with a great soft feel. Eddie Bauer uses a 20-denier ripstop with a Stormrepel™ DWR finish. In the rain, the hoodie beaded up nicely and stayed dry. The lining also has a silky feel and ensures that the hoodie does not ride up — something less-silky items can do. The down fill (800 fill power) is super warm and very lightweight. This ensures that the jacket does not have the clunky feel of down items from the past.

A fleece-lined front pocket adds to the jacket’s look and warmth. The zippers on the pocket move easily. Versatility is key for me and the jacket folds into the front packet creating a fleece-exterior travel pillow. Packability and this alternative use make the hoodie even more appealing. A stylish hood keeps you warm and dry and the elastic at the sleeve cuffs keeps the cold out.

Bulkiness is not an issue, which I expected it to be in this style. Comfortable and easy to wear, the hoodie is styled to be roomy in the arms and shoulders without being boxy. You can layer both under and over this jacket as need be. The jacket is great for adventuring with its functional design and warmth, and is also stylish enough for day-to-day wear around town.

Final Verdict

I like performance gear that performs. I love performance gear that performs and looks great doing it. That’s the Eddie Bauer First Ascent Downlight Hoodie Pullover. It’s warm, water resistant and versatile. It’s also really stylish. The First Ascent Downlight Hoodie Pullover is a great addition to any outdoor wardrobe, and has a permanent place on my packing list.
