Cushe Tammerack WP

First Impressions

In 2011, GearGuide had our first chance to try footwear from UK designer Cushe (pronounced ‘Cushy’), and our female reviewer fell instantly in love with their go-anywhere style and comfort (see Layla M’s review of the Cushe Boutique Sneak here). So when we started looking for winter boot options, we had to see if Cushe could stand up to the elements. The Cushe Tammerack WP is the boot we chose to put to the test.

Features

The Cushe Tammerack WP is not your daddy’s winter boot. Cushe forgoes the traditional boot styling and heavily lugged sole for a more laidback, moccasin-like look and tiny Vibram nibs for grip on the outsole. Frankly, we were skeptical of this non-traditional outsole design but it worked as well on the snow as either of the two more typically lugged boots we tested (the Ecco Dhaka GTX Mid and Lowa Nabucco GTX Mid). On ice, however, be careful.

Specs
Upper: Leather and suede
Waterproofing: Proprietary waterproof bootie
Sole: Vibram
Weight: 2.5 lbs

The Tammerack doesn’t provide much insulation, but we never felt cold in the boot.

The waterproof leather and bootie did an excellent job keeping moisture at bay.

Fit

The Tammerack WP has a moccasin-like fit. The broad toe box provides plenty of room while the heel narrows nicely to keep you locked into the boot. The collar is well padded for comfort and the lacing system allows the boot to be cinched up the ankle for stability.

Underfoot, I found the boot to have minimal cushion. I tend in particular to like a little more forefoot padding than the Tammerack provides, but if your preference is towards the barefoot feel, this is your boot.

Final Verdict

The Cushe Tammerack is one nice winter boot. It performed well in our tests and scored high marks for waterproofing and good looks. If you’re looking for something with a more minimalist fit, you will definitely dig these kicks.
