First Impressions

Last week brought some snow to the hills around GearGuide HQ. Time to find another insulating layer for under the often hardshell jackets that populate our gear closet. Full-zip fleece, that was the ticket. With a bit of left over store credit from Eddie Bauer, we picked up the Cloud Layer Pro in heather gray. It arrived a few days later and immediately found its way into our gear rotation.

Features

The Eddie Bauer Cloud Layer Pro Full-Zip Jacket delivers a very lightweight mid layer or outer layer on those not-so-cold days. It employs 5.5 ounce fleece for the body and sleeves. Pockets are a nylon and spandex blend.

Speaking of pockets, the Cloud Layer Pro includes five. One napoleon pocket on the upper chest is large enough for a smart phone. Two handwarmers sit low on the body. Inside, Eddie Bauer uses the backside of the handwarmers to form two additional interior pockets for whatever else you need to carry. All but the interiors close with fine-toothed zippers.

Specs
Weight: 12.25 oz (men’s medium)
Material: 100% polyester main body; 88% nylon/12% spandex pocket

Stitching on the Cloud Layer Pro is flat. There’s a storm flap behind the main zipper to keep out drafts. The collar goes high up on the neck for additional warmth. And that’s about all there is to this jacket.

Fit

According to the Eddie Bauer website, the Cloud Layer Pro employs “an athletic fit. Close to the body without restricting mobility. Designed to fit over baselayers and lightweight midlayers.” Pretty accurate. It fits tight against my physique. Despite that, the Cloud Layer Pro remains comfortable, and motion was never an issue for me. If you like a little more room in your jackets, go up one size.

Final Verdict

Great additional to any gear collection, the Eddie Bauer Cloud Layer Pro delivers lightweight, comfortable and functional warmth. The athletic fit might be a bit tight for some, but we like it. If you’re looking for a solid mid-layer, give it a try. Find them at Moosejaw.
