STM Impulse Commuter Pack Review
First Impressions
The Aussies are at it again, this time in the commuter pack area. We recently reviewed a camera bag from Australian company Crumpler. And now we’re looking at the Impulse commuter pack from compatriot STM. What is it with these guys from down under and their growing number of luggage companies invading the U.S.? Honestly, I don’t know, but I like it. The STM Impulse is a little bullet-shaped beauty that boasts a little bit of everything in a compact and lightweight package.
Features
STM built a ton of features into the Impulse pack. Right at the top of my list is the dual storage pockets located in the compartment furthest to the rear of the pack. STM designed these units to separately hold a laptop — say a 13-inch Macbook Air or similar product — and your favorite tablet. Since I often find myself carrying both types of devices, I found this feature to be a pure stroke of genius and very well executed. STM lines both pockets with synthetic fleece to keep your tech cargo safe.
Next on my list of top-notch features is the front-facing organization pocket. Sorely lacking on the Chrome Barrage Cargo Pack (also covered in this review), the STM version includes a key ring, pen holders, a zippered pocket and more. Underneath this pocket and also forward facing, STM locates a small pocket for your power brick. As much as I like these features, I’d still like a few more interior storage pockets. The good news though is that the company provides a roll-up cable wrap that’s available for purchase in the same color combo as the Impulse pack.

In addition to the aforementioned pockets, there’s still one other main storage compartment. It includes a pocket as well suitable for flat file folders and the like. On the outside of the bag, there are two water bottle pockets — one zippered, one not. There’s also a luggage pass through strap on the back.
Fit
Not bad at all. The straps are padded and so is the back panel. That panel is also deeply rutted for ventilation. Shoulder straps adjust easily and STM includes a sternum strap although I never used it in these tests.
Final Verdict
We’re digging the Aussie luggage invasion at GearGuide. STM delivers a worthy commuter pack in the Impulse. We’d still like to see a few more organization options, but by and large this little 20 liter pack gets the job done.
