First Impressions

Back in the day, I played my share of golf. And I also had my share of golf wind shirts. You know, those lightweight nylon pullovers designed to keep the breeze off you on the long walk spoiled. I liked the styling of many of them, especially those with the ¼ zip neck. Problem is these apparel items just don’t work in the outdoors. Rib knit cuffs and collars get soaked and don’t dry, the nylon fabrics don’t breath, etc. So when I stumbled upon the North Face Nimble shirt at a local retailer I couldn’t resist giving it a try.

Out of the box, the Nimble shirt is a very cool item completely made out of stretch fabric and in some great colors.

Features

The North Face Nimble shirt is made out of a four-way stretch (soft shell) fabric. It delivers the light weight and performance you’d expect from a technical garment. The shirt provides good wind proofing and water proofing, but you’ll definitely want another layer if you’re stuck in a downpour. The fabric is breathable, and the zip neck gives you good sized opening for ventilation. And there’s a zippered stash (not very conveniently placed) pocket located on the lower rear side for small items.

Fit

The Nimble shirt’s stretch fabric has an amazing amount of give making it easy to get on and off. There’s plenty of room in the garment and the fit seems pretty true to size. I typically wear a medium and that’s perfect for me in the Nimble.

Final Verdict

The Nimble is definitely not your father’s golf wind shirt. It’s way more versatile. I’ve worn it traveling (it’s the perfect weight for long airline trips and the DWR coating keeps it from staining if you spill a cup of coffee or glass of wine), on early morning runs, hiking, even on those rare visits to the golf course. It’s a great intermediate layer when skiing. And they make great gifts. I wore my first one so much, the kids gave me another for Father’s Day this year.
