First Impressions

Seriously rugged-looking, the Five Ten Dome is another entry in the multisport shoe category. Five Ten calls it a “hiking shoe on a trail running last.” On first glance, it shows its hiking chops. The shoe looks chunky and durable. The laces are spread wide across the top of the shoe and use metal trimmed webbing loops for eyelets. The design of the eyelets gives the shoe a distinctive look and makes threading the laces very easy. The shoe has a fairly thick midsole that adds to the rugged look and is very comfortable over miles.

Features

Stealth S1 rubber is the secret to the sole of the Five Ten Dome. Five Ten says the Stealth rubber of the outsole “absorbs more shock than traditional rubber outsoles” and “is designed for durability.” The sole has a great feel to it.

I’ve worn these in a variety of terrain and have been very happy with the comfort of the sole and its grippiness. I really like a shoe that adheres to the ground and these do that very well.

Fit

The chunky look of the Dome led me to believe that the shoe would not be a good match for my foot. However, the Five Ten Dome has great fit. The heel is just the right width, not at all sloppy, and very comfortable.

My favorite part of this shoe is the lacing. When I first saw how wide set the eyelets were I thought it was good looking, but didn’t consider how it would affect the fit. The wide set eyelets spread the pressure of the laces across more area and provide a phenomenally comfortable fit. No throbbing instep!

Final Verdict

This is a great hybrid shoe with a rugged, outdoor look. It gets high marks for comfort both in the fit and the materials.
